PARTY HOUSE: a conversation with USC Heritage Conservation Students

We’re heading to the Party House! Join USC Heritage Conservation students Emily Varley, Chloe Cuffel, and Chuy Barba Bonilla for a discussion of Rudolph Schindler's 1922 Kings Road House. An early mecca for West Hollywood social gatherings, happenings, salons and debates, the house was literally (and metaphorically!) built on Schindler’s Communist party ideals and at the time, flew in the face of American white picket fences. Our discussion topics include: KRH social and artistic context, zoning and permitting, communal living, international housing, marriage, and appliances (it’s related, we swear).

There will be trivia! And prizes! We hope you will join us!

The "Party Goers"

Jesús (Chuy) Barba Bonilla was born in Mexico and grew up in Zacatecas, a Spanish colonial mining city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which is where he became passionate about history and architecture. Jesús obtained his BA in architecture in 2012 from the Universidad del Valle de Mexico and moved to California in the same year. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Heritage Conservation at the University of Southern California while working as an Architectural Designer in the firm of Page & Turnbull, he also serves as Director on the Docomomo US Board.

Chloe Cuffel is a writer and urbanist from Southern California with particular focus on pedestrian advocacy, Los Angeles on film, and dignified housing for all. After working as an editor and making a few short films, she is now pursuing her Masters degrees in Urban Planning and Heritage Conservation. She is a Planner for the City of Glendale, where she lives with her dog Gromit.
