UPDATE: Friends of the Schindler House is excited to announce that the first phase of our preservation work has begun! Thanks to the generosity of the many early donors to the Schindler @100 Campaign, we have begun the crucial work of stabilizing the roof.

Conceived and designed by RMS in 1921 and built in 1922, the Schindler House has held an important place for many generations over the last century who have experienced the power of this special place. Among the most significant examples of architectural modernism in the 20th century, Schindler’s 1922 house and studio has influenced generations of architects, designers, and clients. Rarely a visitor leaves without their own magical moment.
The house was acquired by Friends of the Schindler House in 1980. Since then, great strides have been made to reverse both the unkindness of time and human insensitivity, to return the building as nearly as possible to its original appearance. At the end of the first phase of restoration, in 1987, Paul Goldberger, there working on an article for The New York Times, commented that he had always known it was a great building but now he could see it. The house is globally acknowledged as a seminal statement in the rise of early modern architecture. A 2008 Los Angeles Times survey of architects, preservationists and academics ranked the Schindler House as number 1 of the top ten houses in Southern California. Numerous publications confirm its originality and influence, including a recent article in the New Yorker titled “Celebrating the Centennial of (Arguably) the World’s First Modern House, in West Hollywood”.
Today, in the 100th anniversary year plus one of the Schindler House, we need your help. A new restoration committee has been formed to address specific structural threats and to assign priorities for repair and cyclical maintenance over a five- to ten-year period and to establish an endowment for ongoing maintenance.
